Educating on open source: Not as easy as it seems

,----[ Quote ]
| So Schroeder and IbÃÃez have worked with some
| OSS communities to develop lists of "junior
| jobs" on any given project â jobs that a
| student, a newcomer to OSS can come in an do
| with little oversight and in a relatively
| short period of time. It will give the
| students much-needed exposure to the
| community and provide the community labor to
| do some small tasks and concentrate more on
| the larger issues at hand.
|
| "We're working in collaboration with people
| we know ... [to] create a system where you
| can rapidly absorb the students," IbÃÃez
| said.
|
| Problem is, he said, college really is too
| late to start teaching many of these things.
| In fact, kindergarten wouldn't be too early
| to start instilling the basic tenets of open
| source:Share everything and play fair. But
| the standardized assessments in every state
| make it difficult to weave new aspects into
| the curriculum in middle or high school.

Open Source Education

,----[ Quote ]
| Open source or software freedom isnât
| simply another way of procuring software,
| itâs more a state of mind, a particular
| attitude to technology. Of course, you can
| just treat it as a cheap way of getting
| high quality, robust code, and thereâs
| certainly no requirement to grow a beard,
| wear sandals or drink real ale in order to
| install open source applications. However,
| the philosophies that lie at the core of
| open source as a movement are important,
| and, I think have much to offer to
| education more generally; furthermore, open
| source approaches to development can apply
| to things even more important than
| software, such as curriculum resources,
| school policies and even the curriculum
| itself. This brief paper seeks to explore
| some of these areas.

Netlive,a complete Free Software lab in the pockets of every teacher

| Endless cuts to Public Education budgets
| are creating survival problems to many
| italian Public Schools, forcing them to ask
| more or less "voluntary" contributions to
| parents every year. How can you guarantee
| quality education in such conditions,
| especially when many teachers, either
| because they only get very short term
| assignments, every time in a different
| school, or because their school has more
| than one campus, work every day in a
| different neighborhood?

We must learn to put the virtual world at the heart of our education system

,----[ Quote ]
| The second reason was that it was based on
| the principle of âopen sourceâ, meaning
| that the software is free to install and
| use. Open-source software is fundamentally
| different to the business model used by
| most 20th-century software companies, who
| still write software and then sell
| licences.
|
| If you want to change the software to suit
| your needs, you pay the originator of the
| software to make the changes and the
| software remains the property of
| originator. Open-source software, on the
| other hand, is available to anyone to take,
| change and enhance as they need and then
| share their experiences.

Can Professors Teach Open Source?

,----[ Quote ]
| The answer is simple: the skills required
| to succeed in an open source software
| project are the exact same skills required
| to succeed in any large software project.
| The biggest difference is that, with just a
| bit of guidance, anyone can build their
| software skills in the open source world.

Academia's Obligation to Software Freedom

,----[ Quote ]
| The Free Software philosophy is founded in
| the ideals of freedom, openness, and
| sharing. Producing software based on these
| ideals has great pragmatic benefits. Free
| Software is developed in the interest of
| its users instead of the owner of the
| software. This method of producing software
| benefits the entire community, and the
| software is of much higher quality due to
| the huge number of volunteer and paid
| contributers.

HowToMoodle: OSS Learning Platform Goes Pro

,----[ Quote ]
| Moodle is used for online learning on some 40,000 Web sites, but UK training
| managers have been slow to react. "They are used to proprietary software, but
| this is very often costly to adopt, with heavy license fees that can be
| expensive if large numbers of people are involved.
|
| [...]
|
| "Moodle has been like a lot of open source software, where development has
| been left to individual innovation and training.
|
| "We decided to introduce an element of professionalism into the business."
|
| "We are now training and supporting organizations all over the UK as the
| recognized center of Moodle support," Lawrence added.

Taking the Open Road: University Libraries Explore Options

,----[ Quote ]
| Open source learning management system Moodle alone is now used in 56
| percent of universities since its introduction three years ago, and
| the Open University has moved over to it wholesale. Supporters say
| open source LMS tend to be more modular and make it much easier for
| libraries to contribute content than is the case with
| commercial solutions.
