How Microsoft Took The Wrong Side On The Kyrgyzstan Revolution

,----[ Quote ]
| In my earlier post on the recent Kyrgyzstan
| revolution, I commented on the lack of
| cyber attacks and what that implies for
| this event. Now, thanks to the help of a
| contact in Central Asia, I see that the
| Bakiev administration had effectively shut
| down all opposition media in the months and
| weeks prior to the April 7th revolution,
| which isn't all that surprising.
|
| What is surprising, however, is that
| Microsoft appears to have helped Bakiev do
| it. Essentially, Microsoft's Kyrgyzstan
| agent assisted the Kyrgyz authorities in
| cracking down on dissenting media five days
| before last week's uprising.

Congress slams China and Microsoft, praises Google

| search results in China, a congressional
| panel praised the company's actions while
| excoriating the Beijing government for its

| "They [Microsoft] need to get on the right
| side of human rights rather than enabling

Lawmaker Blasts Microsoft

,----[ Quote ]
| Microsoft came under attack Wednesday from
| a House lawmaker for not following Google's
| lead in resisting China's demand for
| foreign firms to abide by the country's
| censorship rules and Internet restrictions.
|
| During a hearing focused on Internet
| control in China before the Congressional-
| Executive Commission on China, Rep. Chris
| Smith, R-NJ, singled out Microsoft, which
| has said it will continue to operate in
| China and follow Chinese laws. Microsoft
| "needs to get with the program" and "join
| the side of human rights...rather than
| enabling tyranny," Smith said.
