High performance Theora codec for Firefox on OMAP3 previewed

,----[ Quote ]
| On his blog, Matthew Gregan reports that
| there has been some success in shifting the
| major part of the processing load caused by
| decoding Theora videos into the DSP
| (Digital Signal Processor) core of Texas
| Instruments' OMAP 3 processor. This family
| of processors is used in the Motorola
| Droid, Nokia N900 and Palm Pre smartphones
| as well as the Beagle Board. Gregan is
| employed by Mozilla and is currently
| working on improving video and audio
| support in Firefox. It is not currently
| known when the development work previewed
| will be incorporated into a future release
| of Mozilla's mobile browser.

A look at the future of Firefox add-ons

,----[ Quote ]
| Recently we came across some information
| that Firefox would be getting restart-less
| add-ons sooner than we expected, and it
| prompted us to take a look at the future of
| Firefox add-ons.
|
| [...]
|
| Jetpack started off as a Mozilla labs
| experiment for the future of Firefox
| extensions. It was meant to be a simple new
| way to get started writing extensions for
| Firefox using web standard technologies
| such as HTML, Javascript and CSS. The
| Jetpack system was supposed to eventually
| become an alternate -- perhaps a
| replacement -- for the current way of
| writing extensions for Firefox.
|
| Jetpacks were restart-less extensions for
| default which used the Jetpack APIs to do
| all the work. This meant that Firefox could
| make as many changes as they wanted between
| two versions of Firefox, and as long as
| they ensured that the Jetpack API doQuotees
| not change no add-on functionality will
| break.
|
| After 8 iterations, the Jetpack project
| came to an end, as the original project had
| lost clarity in its goal. However from its
| ashes the Jetpack SDK has arisen, which
| takes into account some of the lessons
| learnt while creating Jetpack.

10 MORE outstanding Firefox extensions

,----[ Quote ]
| Itâs been a while since we last took a look
| at worthwhile Firefox extensions. Well,
| itâs time again. But now, Firefox has added
| collections to the mix. Extension
| collections are exactly what they sound
| like â collections of related extensions.
| In this list, we have a few worthwhile
| collections (since theyâre new, there
| arenât many) as well as some stand-alone
| extensions.

Mozilla Balkans 2010

,----[ Quote ]
| After a lot of talk about a possible event
| somewhere in South-Eastern Europe, we
| finally did it. We are now organizing a
| whole new and somewhat experimental event
| in the Rocky Balkans. Leaders of local
| Mozilla communities from the Balkans have
| joined their efforts to organize this
| event, the first of this type in the
| Balkans.

Q&A: Mozilla's Tristan Nitot

,----[ Quote ]
| Having a pay cheque definitely is a change! In 2003 there were eight to 10
| employees. Now we have 160. We now have market share, [meaning] the ability
| to influence the market and force Redmond to wake up and improve the
| product...while the product is interesting, whatâs really important is the
| health of the web.

Firefox market share exceeds 20%, Internet Explorer dips below 70%

,----[ Quote ]
| It has been six weeks since Firefox 3 has been released and if we believe
| market share numbers provided by an ongoing survey of NetApplications, then
| it appears that Mozilla has had a successful launch with market share gains,
| especially at the expense of Microsoftâs Internet Explorer.

Firefox Beta release date announced

,----[ Quote ]
| Interestingly and more importantly, Firefox 3.1 now includes Ogg Vorbis audio
| and Ogg Theora video codec support. The implementation of natively supported
| and open source audio and video formats in Firefox has been underway for more
| than a year and is driven by the developers' intent that Firefox 3.1 support
| the next World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) hypertext markup language
| specification HTML5, which includes the new "<audio>" and "<video>" tags.

New tab switching added for Firefox 3.1

,----[ Quote ]
| Press Ctrl + Tab (or Shift + Ctrl + Tab) and you are presented with tab
| thumbnails and titles with the most recently visited ones first so you can
| more easily determine which tab you want to go, have the one you most
| probably want to go closer, and as a result get to it faster. Hold Ctrl
| pressed and keep pressing Tab to see the thumbnails smoothly scroll to the
| left while the status bar displays the tab web address.

Firefox is King

,----[ Quote ]
| Mozilla Firefox is now the king of all browsers. --At least based on the web
| traffic data gathered from junauza.com and from a popular tech blog by known
| Windows Vista fanboy user Jeff Atwood. Firefox tops all other web browsers
| and most importantly kicked its archrival Internet Explorer out of the
| highest position.

Firefox 3.1 (Shiretoko) planned features draft

,----[ Quote ]
| A very early draft of planned features reveals that as expected, this release
| will be mainly about landing stuff that didnât make it on time for the
| Firefox 3, along with the usual performance, stability and security bug
| fixes.
|
| Visual tab switching and tab searching/filtering were both tried for Firefox
| 3, abandoned for other more critical features, and are being considered for
| 3.1. Ctrl+Tab, a extension developed by Dao Gottwald implements both of them
| displaying a thumbnail of the opened tabs when pressing Ctrl + Tab to switch
| tabs.

Developers: Firefox 3.1 Update Should Be "Easy"

,----[ Quote ]
| The release of Firefox 3.0 has been a resounding success, but for some the
| upgrade path has been less than painless. The latest version of the open
| source browser differed enough from previous versions that many add-ons had
| to be substantially rewritten before they would work with the new release.
| And just when the dust appeared to be clearing, Firefox 3.1 is on the
| horizon.
