Hello Kate, goodbye vi

,----[ Quote ]
| In my last article I introduced you to Gedit
| (see âGedit: No more text-based editor for
| you!â) and, as promised, this time around we
| will examine the KDE equivalentâKate. Kate
| is an interesting beast in that it is
| comprised of two parts: KatePart (which is
| the underlying editor that is also used in
| other KDE components that require an editor)
| and Kate (the actual text editor). Kate is a
| complete rewrite of the older kwrite. And,
| like Gedit, Kate offers a number of
| outstanding features. In this article I will
| introduce you to Kate.

system tray progress

,----[ Quote ]
| We've been slowly working away at getting
| the system tray in order. The goal is
| deceptively simple: allow us to host the
| entries there in a way that meshes with the
| rest of the user interface. It's actually
| been fairly complex due not only to the
| large number of existing applications that
| use (or, in many cases, abuse) the system
| tray, but because "meshes with" mean that
| the presentation and the interaction choices
| need to be done by the system tray. In the
| past it's been the application that has been
| in control of this, leading to utter chaos.
| With the new D-Bus based system, which has
| been picked up by some distributors for
| GNOME as well (in particular Canonical), we
| are now free to show the system tray entries
| they way we want to. It's been a long road,
| and we're finally coming to the last few
| steps in it.

Ubuntu: Install Amarok 1.4 in 10.04 (Lucid Lynx)

,----[ Quote ]
| Many people still like Amarok 1.4, in spite
| of the improvements in Amarok since 2.0 was
| released. Lucid has Amarok 2.3 in the
| repos, and itâs really nice, but there are
| still fans of Amarok 1.4 who may want to run
| that in Lucid.
|
| Weâll be using Bogdan Butnaruâs Jaunty PPA.
| (Thanks, Bogdan!) Yes, I said the Jaunty
| PPA. Bogdan didnât put one up specifically
| for Karmic, because there was no change to
| the packages. The Jaunty packages worked
| just fine in Karmic, and they work just fine
| in Lucid, too.

Kubuntu is not Ubuntu

,----[ Quote ]
| So since Canonical does currently not exploit
| all business potential coming from Kubuntu,
| the community will probably be responsible
| for quite some time to come.
|
| This ultimately means that the community will
| apply the rules and judgment of which they
| think it is the best available. Since the
| community is mostly consisting of people
| contributing in their spare time human time
| resource is rather limited and thus one must
| choose the battles carefully. In consequence
| this means that some things simply cannot be
| done. Like say Ubuntu One integration, of
| course it would be nice to have, but
| currently there are much more important
| things to work on. Same goes for porting
| Software Center. Finally it also means that
| the community gets to decide how much
| branding gets committed, and currently the
| opinion is to stick with KDEâs. Not only is
| their artwork of incredibly high quality, but
| also are they the biggest contributors to the
| Kubuntu desktop, so they deserve most credit.
|
| On that last note I would also like to note
| that Kubuntuâs target was to make the best
| KDE distribution, not the best Ubuntu flavor,
| thus deriving from KDEâs artwork and color
| scheme would not only be in conflict with the
| fact that Kubuntuâs color palette is almost
| identical, but also with what Kubuntu is
| trying to achieve.
|
| In short: Kubuntu is not Ubuntu. Occasionally
| blogs and news stories and bug reports assume
| Canonical is responsible for things they are
| not. In general, me and the other Kubuntu
| developers are responsible for Kubuntu,
| please keep this in mind when moaning or
| praising us.

Kubuntu Lucid Review

,----[ Quote ]
| I am an early adopter of KDE 4 and I welcome
| the radical changes it has made from earlier
| versions. I have been using KDE 4 from 4.0
| release and has been following its growth
| from simple & buggy to feature-rich and
| mature. The fifth installment of KDE 4, KDE
| SC 4.4, released on February 9th caused a
| lot of excitement among KDE fans like me. I
| could not wait for the shiny new packages
| arrive in a distro near me.
|
| Kubuntu seemed to be the winning choice
| because I have seen early KDE 4.4 reviews
| state that Kubuntu was the easiest and less
| buggy path to 4.4. In this article, I will
| be reviewing both Kubuntu Lucid Lynx the new
| KDE SC 4.4. I chose the 32 bit version of
| Kubuntu Lucid Lynx alpha 2. The test machine
| was Compaq Presario V3000 series (V3624AU)
| with AMD Turion 64 X2 @1.8GHz cpu, 3 GB RAM,
| Nvidia GeForce Go 7150 integrated display
| card and Broadcom wifi card.

Kubuntu 9.10 Review

,----[ Quote ]
| I recently broke my usual trend of sticking
| to Debian (stable) with a KDE 3.5 desktop and
| decided to try Kubuntu. I then decided to
| write this review...
|
| In the past it seemed that Kubuntu was an
| afterthought or some obscure side project
| (like Christian Ubuntu), but Kubuntu 9.10
| really steals the show. As many others have
| said, Kubuntu seems better put together than
| Ubuntu in many ways. The "glitchiness" in
| Kubuntu 9.04 has been diminished greatly in
| this latest release. This is probably due
| mostly in part to a newer version of KDE 4
| (that shows the great potential that KDE 4
| has).
