The People Who Support Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| How do you use Linux? At work? At home?
|
| Fernandez: I had dabbled with Linux in
| school, but I really only got into it at
| university. With the exception of my
| partner, very few things excite me as much
| as open source software; and Linux, as an
| open source operating system, struck a
| chord with me. These days I use Linux on
| several machines at home for development,
| email and web browsing; as a server; as a
| media center; and on my phone.
|
| You recently joined The Linux Foundation as
| an individual member. Can you share with us
| why you joined and what you hope to get out
| of membership?
|
| Fernandez: I joined because I've been using
| Linux for years. I find it an inspiring
| community and I had $99 to spare! Kernel
| development is something I'd like to get
| into eventually and The Linux Foundation
| provides some great resources for learning
| more about the kernel and the developer
| community. Membership with the Foundation
| (from my few weeks of experience) is a
| great way to stay on top of new
| developments in Linux and connect with the
| Linux community. To be honest, more than
| any of these reasons, I joined to give
| something back to a community that has made
| such a big difference in my daily life.

DRI2 Sync & Swap For ATI Finally Comes About

,----[ Quote ]
| Last year a new set of DRI2 extensions came
| about for sync and swap support of display
| buffers to better reduce potential
| "tearing" that may appear on displays in
| some composited environments. This work
| that's exposed to the client through
| OpenGL/GLX extensions also can lead to
| improved performance, video memory savings,
| and other benefits as talked about
| extensively on the Composite Swap Wiki
| page. A new GLX swap event extension also
| came about out of expressed needs by the
| Clutter/Mutter developers.

Initial Open ATI Evergreen Support By FOSDEM?

,----[ Quote ]
| Hopefully the Evergreen support with mode-
| setting and ShadowFB support will be here by
| FOSDEM on the 6th of February, but it will
| still be longer before there is real 2D
| acceleration (EXA) or any 3D acceleration
| within the open-source stack.

R600/700 Mesa Driver Picks Up Blit Support

,----[ Quote ]
| While a blitter module was introduced for
| Gallium3D that uses the 3D engine for
| blitting, this doesn't help those without blit
| support that are still running the "classic"
| Mesa driver stack. Over the night, however,
| blit support has arrived for the ATI R600/700
| Mesa driver. This support arrived in the form
| of three commits (1, 2, 3) that increase the
| driver's code-base by around 2,000 lines of
| code.
