Intelâs Single-chip Cluster Computer (SSC)

,----[ Quote ]
| There is even a modified version of Linux
| available. By the way, a separate Linux
| kernel runs on each core. It cannot run
| across the whole processor because it does
| not support cache coherency.

The Ethernet Cluster

,----[ Quote ]
| When the first Linux clusters were
| constructed Ethernet was one of the few
| choices for an interconnect. Of course there
| were more expensive and custom ways to
| connect computers, but Ethernet was the first
| network technology supported by Linux.
| Ethernet was also the most ubiquitous
| network, which also made it the cheapest.

GNU/Linux Tops TOP500 Supercomputers Again

,----[ Quote ]
| The fact that GNU/Linux totally dominates the top 500 supercomputing list is
| hardly news, but the fact that it has managed to *increase* its market share
| yet further is.
|
| Here are the results for June 2009:
|
|
| GNU/Linux 443 (88.6%)
| Windows 5 (1.0%)
| Unix 22 (4.4%)
|
|
| and here are the figures for six months ago:
|
|
| GNU/Linux 439 (87.8%)
| Windows 5 (1.0%)
| Unix 23 (4.6%)

Linux shows staying power on Top500

,----[ Quote ]
| The latest list indicates growing Linux dominance. Linux is used in the top
| nine supercomputer systems in the world. When considered as the primary OS or
| part of a mixed-OS supersystem, Linux is now present in 469 of the
| supercomputer sites, 93.8% of the Top500 list.

Why is Linux THE FASTEST operating system today?

,----[ Quote ]
| Now that I mentioned supercomputers at the time of this writing the worlds
| fastest supercomputer runs Linux. In fact most of them run Linux as you will
| see here in the list of the top 500 supercomputers. Out of all of the
| operating systems on these supercomputers Linux is a whopping 87.8% with
| windows only (giggle) 1% as can be seen here. The current worlds fastest
| supercomputer runs..... Redhat Linux and Fedora. The exact same ones you can
| download and install on your personal computer.
