Ubuntu derivatives flourish

,----[ Quote ]
| Custom versions of Ubuntu can offer
| anything from ease-of-use to a multimedia
| studio
|
| Ubuntu 10.04, aka Lucid Lynx, has now been
| released and work has already started on
| version 10.10, its successor. But, if
| Ubuntu 10.04 isn't your ideal operating
| system then it's worth taking a look at
| some of Ubuntu's derivative versions.
| Chances are that one those will suit your
| needs.

Canonicalâs Red Headed Stepchildren

,----[ Quote ]
| Who Are These Red Headed Step Children?
| Before I go any further with this column,
| letâs take a quick look at each Ubuntu
| derivative and then Iâll talk about whatâs
| wrong with them and what Canonical needs
| to do to fix this mess.
|
| Officially Supported
| Kubuntu â Kubuntu uses the KDE desktop
| environment instead of GNOME. It also
| leans heavily on KDEâs desktop
| applications rather than Ubuntuâs GNOME
| applications.
|
| EduBuntu â Edubuntu is essentially Ubuntu
| for parents, teachers, kids and schools.
| Edubuntu features educational games, math
| applications, text editors and a bunch of
| other applications focused on learning.
|
| Ubuntu Server Edition â You want this
| version of Ubuntu if youâre going to be
| running a server.

The other Ubuntu Linux distributions

,----[ Quote ]
| I like the brand spanking new Ubuntu 10.04
| a lot. But while I like its GNOME 2.30
| interface, I also like other interfaces
| such as KDE. It would be nice if Ubuntu
| could also play MP3s, common video formats
| and Flash from the get-go. You could
| install all these and other extras from the
| Ubuntu repositories, but there's also a
| wide-variety of Ubuntu spin-offs that come
| ready to give you the functionality you
| want right out of the box.
|
| [...]
|
| Kubuntu 10.04. Like the name suggests, the
| big difference between Ubuntu and Kubuntu
| is that the K-Ubuntu runs KDE 4.4.2 instead
| of GNOME 2.30 for its desktop. But Kubuntu
| isn't just Ubuntu with KDE. Instead of
| KDE's default Konqueror Web browser,
| Kubuntu defaults to using Firefox 3.6.3.

Lubuntu release 10.04 "final stable beta"

,----[ Quote ]
| Lubuntu 10.04 uses Chromium as its default
| browser and is based on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
| which was released last week. Other
| lightweight applications included in the
| distribution are the Sylpheed email client,
| Gnumeric spreadsheet, Abiword word
| processor, Pidgin instant messaging and
| Leafpad text editor. The developers do
| point out that although Lubuntu 10.04 is
| based on the LTS (Long Term Support)
| release of Ubuntu, it is not an LTS
| release. Full details of the applications
| used and release notes are available and
| Lubuntu can be downloaded directly (ISO
| image download, 530MB) or via bittorrent.

EasyPeasy and the Challenges of Linux Netbook Design

,----[ Quote ]
| Netbook desktops in free and open source
| software (FOSS) are in a state of rapid
| development.
|
| [...]
|
| EasyPeasy's software has few surprises for
| anyone familiar with Ubuntu's. Generally, it
| consists of GNOME components such as
| Evolution, or Ubuntu parts such as Computer
| Janitor or Software Sources. In fact, you do
| not have to look far to see uncustomized
| pieces such as an icon for Ubuntu Software
| Centre or Ubuntu One.
|
| Nor does EasyPeasy avoid proprietary software
| such as Skype or Flash -- no doubt in the name
| of user convenience. Like Ubuntu, it also
| includes a number of Mono applications, such
| as Tomboy and Banshee. Since EasyPeasy openly
| declares its willingness to make such choices,
| you cannot be very surprised that it walks the
| walk as well as talks the talk.
