3 questions for Apple and HTML5

Mozilla evangelist: Apple HTML5 demos harm the open Web

,----[ Quote ]
| Apple recently launched an HTML5 showcase
| on its official website with several demos
| that are intended to highlight some of the
| advanced Web development capabilities that
| are made available by emerging standards.
| The showcase has attracted criticism from
| standards advocates, however, because it
| pops up a message telling users that they
| will need to download Safari in order to
| view the demos.
|
| [...]
|
| Oddly enough, Apple has a whole separate
| version of the showcase on its developer
| website that exhibits none of these
| offensive characteristics. The more
| appropriately named "Safari Technology
| Demos" page has the same demos, but
| doesn't categorically block alternate
| browsers. I was able to test the demos in
| Chrome and found that most of them worked
| as expected. This alternate page is
| accessible by clicking the "Developers"
| link at the bottom of the HTML5 showcase.
| This alternate version of the showcase is
| much closer to how it should be done.

Could this be what the iPad is used for?

Apple gets its Android on

,----[ Quote ]
| Apple is now more formally aligning its
| different platforms and devices via the
| operating system, and this is something
| that has been happening with Android for
| at least a couple of years and with Linux
| for longer. There is no question Apple is
| finding success with its devices and
| market growth, but it is also interesting
| to see a more open alternative giving it
| real competition, not only in smartphones,
| but in many more facets of technology and
| our lives.

Android and iPhone, and Then Everyone Else

,----[ Quote ]
| Once place where I see Android excelling
| is in the non-mobile phone space. This is
| a place where iPhone is not destined â
| Steve Jobs is not taking products to a
| place where there is no App Store, period.
|
| Just as Linux powers routers and storage
| systems, I believe that Android can be
| used as a âbetter Linux distributionâ,
| powering appliances in the consumer,
| commercial and even military markets.
| Short of some version of âApple TVâ,
| Android can expect some freedom from
| iPhone in these markets. And yes, I think
| BlackBerry will sit this one out too.

Multitasking the Android Way

,----[ Quote ]
| Android is fairly unique in the ways it
| allows multiple applications to run at the
| same time. Developers coming from a
| different platform may find the way it
| operates surprising. Understanding its
| behavior is important for designing
| applications that will work well and
| integrate seamlessly with the rest of the
| Android platform. This article covers the
| reasons for Android's multitasking design,
| its impact on how applications work, and
| how you can best take advantage of
| Android's unique features.
|
| [...]
|
| So far, we have a way for applications to
| implicitly do work in the background, as
| long as the process doesn't get killed by
| Android as part of its regular memory
| management. This is fine for things like
| loading web pages in the background, but
| what about features with harder
| requirements? Background music playback,
| data synchronization, location tracking,
| alarm clocks, etc.

Adobe Giving Free Android Handsets To Employees?

,----[ Quote ]
| BGR is reporting that Adobe will be giving
| away free Android handsets to their
| employees. While this has not been
| confirmed yet, it is believed that Adobe
| will give their employees a phone running
| Android 2.2 with Flash so that they become
| comfortable developing with Flash on the
| Android platform.

TMO Announces MyTouch 3G Slide!

,----[ Quote ]
| So, it sports Android 2.1, comes in three
| colors, has Swype installed, and has a
| pretty nifty screen. What's missing from
| this press release though? How about a
| processor speed?

Google Android 2.2 / FroYo: Successor Codenamed Gingerbread

,----[ Quote ]
| As FroYo has not even been released yet
| details regarding Gingerbread are extremely
| scarce, however we have heard that
| Gingerbread will be based on Linux Kernel
| 2.6.33 or 34, whether it will be Android
| 2.3, 2.4 or 2.5 is also unclear.
