Ubuntu Linux 10.04 Lucid Lynx

,----[ Quote ]
| In Short
| Ubuntu's one-size-fits-all nature makes it
| a good initial introduction to Linux-based
| operating systems. Visually, it keeps
| improving, but it is not quite all the way
| there yet. While many can argue whether
| Linux is ready for the desktop, there's
| little doubt that Canonical packages up
| Ubuntu better than the vast majority of
| distributions out there. The biggest
| compliment one can pay to Ubuntu is that
| it feels like a professional product in
| its installation, look and feel and above
| all updates. If nothing else, you should
| give Ubuntu a try to give you some
| perspective on how well your own OS suits
| you.
|
| The Good
| Maturity and popularity aid in usability,
| integration with cloud services, long-term
| support (LTS) release, painless update
| from previous version.
|
| The Bad
| Might be too Mickey Mouse for hardcore
| Linux users, strong branding and colour
| scheme.
|
| The Ugly
| Nothing.
|
| Bartender's Score
| 8/10

Ubuntu 10.04: a real money saver for small businesses

,----[ Quote ]
| In use, Ubuntu is a stable operating
| system with a mature front end. Version 10
| is a pleasure to use, feeling more
| responsive than any form of Windows and
| easy to configure via the various control
| panel dialog boxes.

Ubuntu 10.04 review

,----[ Quote ]
| UNR, the netbook version, benefits most
| from the new theme and more efficient use
| of screen space, but we're waiting for
| Canonical's Unity and Gnome 3.0 for any
| real taste of revolution on the small
| screen.
|
| What we're left with is a division. If
| you're not a current Linux user then
| Ubuntu offers the best Linux experience
| you can have. The desktop looks ultra-
| modern and the package manager is slick,
| expansive and easy to use.
|
| But if you're a Linux user looking for a
| spring break from your current
| distribution, this release doesn't do
| enough to warrant the upgrade. While it
| looks nice, there's no real innovation and
| nothing we can get too excited about.

Getting Used to Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx

The Day of the Linux Desktop: Q&A With Canonical Founder Mark Shuttleworth

,----[ Quote ]
| LIN: What will take Ubuntu to the next
| level?
|
| Shuttleworth: In terms of looking forward
| and breaking into new areas of production,
| we are seeing sort of a real shift in the
| way people think about at Ubuntu in two
| different environments.
|
| On the consumer front, we're seeing a
| shift in the way people think about
| alternative platforms to Windows amongst
| the PC companies. It used to be a kiss of
| death to present yourself as a genuine
| alternative to Windows. But the success of
| the Web and the success of Apple (Nasdaq:
| AAPL) have really made the PC companies
| think that it is possible to offer
| something that is perceived to be valuable
| even if it is not Windows.
|
| So we're seeing a rapid ramp-up of the
| number of PCs that ship around the world
| with Ubuntu, which is good for us. And
| those are going to folks who are not Linux
| enthusiasts and are not Linux specialists.
| So it has really raised the bar on the
| quality and crispness of the experience
| you have to deliver in order to keep those
| people happy.

Canonical to offer new Ubuntu Linux business support options

,----[ Quote ]
| Linux is great â if you know what you're
| doing. If you don't, Linux, like any
| operating system, can be a pain. Enter
| Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu
| Linux. On June 7th, Canonical will start
| offering new Ubuntu Server and Ubuntu
| Desktop "Ubuntu Advantage" business
| support services.

Ubuntu LTS 10.04, a Linux OS at Its Best

,----[ Quote ]
| It's convenient to have a server install
| that's entirely separate from the desktop
| install, and while it may not be as
| visually slick as the desktop version,
| that's not really what you want on a
| server. The install was straightforward; I
| really liked the package collections; and
| everything was functional on first bootup.
| Five years of support is good, and all the
| software installed was fairly up-to-date
| (within a couple of release points, which
| is reasonable given the testing cycle
| needed for a long-term release). Ubuntu
| provides security updates regularly, so
| any security improvements in more recent
| releases should be rolled out to your
| servers quickly.
|
| One problem I found was that the
| documentation available online is a bit
| shaky. In some cases, it still refers to
| earlier releases, which isn't very
| reassuring. However, Ubuntu is obviously
| making an effort with its documentation,
| and it's easier to find information than
| it is with some other distros.
|
| Overall, Lucid Lynx is an impressive
| offering and definitely something I'd be
| happy to use for my own servers. More
| console-driven system management tools and
| better documentation, would make it an
| even better option.

Ubuntu Linux for Windows Users

,----[ Quote ]
| The latest Ubuntu Linux release seems to
| have been a huge hit. Review after Review
| after Review have pretty much pegged it as
| the next best thing since sliced bread,
| but does this release of Ubuntu Linux live
| up to the hype?
