Linux is indeed a kernel, but I was wrongly under the impression that Apple had used it. After all, they needed compensate for terrible multi-tasking (among other things) from which I still suffer when using OS 9.</description>

Sorry but it's not. Linux is a kernel. Not an OS. There is no Linux code in OS X.
OS X is based on Darwin, which is BSD, and some GNU utilities and apps.
But not Linux.</description>
