* Much of what commercial sites tell us about health is either already well known by almost everyone or misinformation or untrue. Dean Ornish M.D. is my source and Guru on diet and health, he is a physician whose career I have followed and I value his advice. I eat fish about twice a month. Regarding fish, he offers this: * Fish contain saturated fat and cholesterol, so fish and fish oils tend to cause LDL levels to increase * Fish oils are higher in omega-3 fatty acids than whole grains and soybean products; this may increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke. * In people with diabetes, fish oils may cause insulin resistance and elevation of blood glucose levels. Fish caught in coastal waters may be contaminated with pesticides, chlorinated hydrocarbons and heavy metals * Fish oils are prone to oxidation and spoilage. * 2 or 3 servings of fish each week may be acceptable if your blood cholesterol is low, although no one knows for sure. * A recent study from Wales published in The Lancet found a 29% reduction in mortality in men who ate fish 3 times per week following a heart attack. The incidence of heart attacks, however, did not change. * If you already have coronary heart disease, I recommend that you do not add fish or fish oil to your diet. If you do not have heart disease, then eating fish is a better source of omega-3 fatty acids than taking fish oil pills.
