Yes, I can do this in KDE 3.1.

I _changed_ (overwrote) Midnight Commander, File Preview and the others.
This means that I essentially lost them, but I now have 4 profiles that
suit me better and I invoke them using CTRL+ALT+key.

I can do that, but it is not accessible from the command-line. I tried
several times.

It sounds as if you are way ahead of me. I like to keep my Desktop rather
empty though.
