I sometimes wonder if in the absence of religion, an alternative
distinguishing factor would have emerged. Religion can descend to what is
called 'rituals' and then you have cultures, regional customs, families and
history. Nonetheless, as you pointed out, far less conflicts can be
justified when religion is excluded from the equation altogether.
