This sounds like it could be a wiring issue. I used to be in the same
situation with SuSE 9.3. What happens when you disconnect the input/output
wires or use a separate wire. Also test this with a set of headphones.

If the humming is rather loud and is obviously software-driven, remove the
sound card using YaST and attempt a re-install that does not rely on probing
and automatic hardware detection.
