I regularly use MATLAB, which uses Java for all of its GUI capabilities. In
general, I like Java applications. Although they are slow, they are
portable, rather reliable, and stable. About half of the time, I use
Java-based programs. Java isn't going away, but it's evolving. Its recent
flirt with Ubuntu and Open Source is an indication of this.
