Under SuSE, it could have been a case of click-to-open (from Konqueror, which
I happened to be using at the time). However, security is not lax. So I just
needed to change the bin file to executable (simple tick box would do, but I
prefer the command-line) and, from there onwards, it was a cruise.

Picasa and Earth for Linux prove that Linux installers can be made rather
excellent given the rigour and assuming the final product is not
'half-baked' or expect users to possess much expertise.

Exceptions:

Gentoo emerge (never used it, but I once read about it in a Wiki), apt-get,
Synaptic, and even Zen or YaST. I have no experience with Yum. When all else
fails, .configure && make && sudo make install;

YaST and its supplied RPM's, as well as Synaptic, rarely have dependency
issues, unless the distribution requires a free and trivial upgrade.

Best wishes,

Roy
