Update:

>From Dell (apparently):

'We are actively looking at the almost 100,000 responses to our Linux survey
and formulating plans to update our program. It is surprising that so many
posts ask the question, "Can Dell really offer Linux on its desktops?" The
simple answer is yes. We are responding to a need, updating our stategy and
are leaving few options off the table. We are listening and not making empty
gestures. Stay tuned for an update.'
