The Gatekeepers of our technology

,----[ Quote ]
| The Linux Community is having an on-again off-again love affair with Dell.
| It's been a rocky affair since Dell decided it would bump the positive side
| of their ledger by offering the Linux Operating System on their products.
|
| There have been some embarrassing public displays of affection and there have
| been equally public spats, with a few pots and pans thrown...
|
| So it goes with passionate couples. A word of advice is always welcome though
| and I might offer one of the afore-mentioned parties a bit of it now...

Red Hat Nearly Doubles Its Partner Channel

,----[ Quote ]
| More proof open source is infiltrating (and redefining) the IT channel: Red
| Hat’s partner network now exceeds 1,300 companies — up 84 percent from 713
| companies in January 2008, according to The VAR Guy’s Open Source 50 report.
| Of course, “more partners” doesn’t always mean “better partners.” But Red
| Hat’s ability to recruit channel partners to back Linux and now JBoss
| middleware proves the company has learned a few key lessons from Microsoft.

DELL, we want a free software computerDELL, vogliamo un computer libero

,----[ Quote ]
| Our ideal computer (desktop, laptop, subnotebook) has:
|
|    1. an Atheros wireless chip because it uses free (as in freedom) drivers
|       and so it can function perfectly in every GNU/Linux distribution.
|    2. the coreboot free BIOS.
|    3. a fully free GNU/Linux distribution preinstalled like gNewSense
|
| No other company offers something like that and the request for such a
| product is high, as demonstrated by the famous Mark Shuttlework post about a
| free software laptop.

Dell Inspiron 1525 Notebook

,----[ Quote ]
| As we shared last month, at Phoronix we will begin delivering reviews of
| retail netbooks and notebooks with all testing (of course) being done under
| Linux. Earlier this month we looked at the Samsung NC10 Netbook and are in
| the process of working on a few other reviews currently, but in this review
| we are looking at Dell's Inspiron 1525 notebook.
|
| [...]
|
| The Linux compatibility of the Dell Inspiron 1525 was also great aside from
| the web-camera with a uvcvideo driver issue we experienced with Cheese, but
| that is not specific to this Dell notebook. However, all core functionality
| of the notebook worked as expected with Ubuntu 8.10.

Memo to Dell: Pump Up Ubuntu Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| Sure, Dell has successfully introduced a few Ubuntu PCs and laptops to the
| geek crowd. But now it’s time for Dell to disrupt the very PC industry it
| helped to build.
|
| Remember: Michael Dell himself used Ubuntu Linux on a home PC before Dell
| (the company) decided to sell Ubuntu systems in mid-2007. Greg Davis, Dell’s
| new global channel chief, should do the same.
|
| Start using disruptive technology, Greg, to see emerging market opportunities
| before Dell's competition.

Dell’s Linux Ads: Microsoft’s Nightmare Before Christmas?

,----[ Quote ]
| For at least the third time in recent weeks, prominent Dell newspaper
| advertisements feature the Inspiron Mini 9 Netbook running Canonical’s Ubuntu
| 8.04 (that’s a small Linux notebook, folks). The VAR Guy hears Microsoft “has
| gone postal” over the Linux notebook ads. You might even say this is
| Microsoft’s nightmare before Christmas. Here’s the complete scoop.
|
| [...]
|
| At $349, Dell’s low-cost Ubuntu Linux system is “giving Microsoft fits,”
| according to one source familiar with the Microsoft-Dell relationship. “It’s
| one thing to have Dell ship Linux to consumers,” said the source. “It’s quite
| another to have Dell advertising Linux to millions of consumers in a Sunday
| newspaper heading into the holiday season.”

You Don't Make Mistakes Like This.

,----[ Quote ]
| Dell screwed up. No wait...they didn't screw anything up. They fully intended
| to do what they did. Now tell me they are not under the thumb of Microsoft.
| Why was this statement necessary? Let the customer decide. So tell me Dell is
| a friend of Linux or that they are not complete quislings for the Redmond
| Empire. Oh please...I do so want to hear you tell me this. It will be an
| Academy Award performance. It will have to be to explain away this.

Dell first ad - All About Ubuntu Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| If this an Dell / Enfatico spot– we take back all the slams we had to the
| advertising agency prior… It’s about Linux! Whoo hoo!!

Dell Launches Consumer Advertising for Ubuntu Linux PCs

,----[ Quote ]
| It’s one small step for Dell and consumer Linux — and one giant leap for
| Canonical’s Ubuntu Linux efforts. Specifically, Dell is spending advertising
| dollars to promote PCs with Ubuntu Linux preinstalled. The move has
| significant implications for the business world as well. Here’s why.
|
| First, some details about the advertisement. Many many U.S. newspapers on
| Sunday, October 12, included a multi-page Dell flier. Among the many products
| advertised was the Dell Inspiron Mini 9, a low-cost sub-notebook designed for
| email and Web browsing.

Google starts running Dell Linux Desktop ads

,----[ Quote ]
| While working on my personal blog site, which happens to have Google
| Adsense ads running on it, I was surprised to find Google ads for
| Linux-powered Dell desktops showing up.
