Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have built an on-line application which makes use of 'free labour'. Internet surfers who have plenty of time to spare assist in a brute-force-like manner. In the process of playing a game, objects in photographs are recognised and labelled manually. Consequently, big piles of useful data can be easily obtained.
Since the Post-Gazette first wrote about the ESP Game in October 2003, more than 80,000 people have played the game and in the process have generated more than 10 million descriptive words for 1 million images
