You can always use Synaptic to get GCC and XMMS (as I once did) to make XMMS and its many splendid plug-ins available. The main distribution that I use at the moment is SuSE, which is bloated and spans 5 CD’s. All in all, I do recommend SuSE or OpenSuSE only if bloat/size suits your needs.
