Puppy Linux is a bizarre little distribution, and it takes quite a while to become accustomed to its quirks, but I quite like it.

Firstly, though Puppy has a repository, in practice it's not very large or thorough. Many Puppy users end up getting a large portion of their packages from the Puppy Linux forum instead. Everything from Trinity (the KDE 3 fork) to Eclipse to CAD software can be found on there, if you're patient enough and have the time to mess with the spotty forum search. It's certainly not an elegant solution to the small repository, but it can be made to work.

Secondly, though the basic Puppy ISO lacks both the kernel source and GCC (among other things), there are two packages (really squash file systems) that can be installed to provide just that. (They were apparently kept out of the regular ISO to keep the size down.)

The package manager itself is pretty rudimentary, though, I admit.

Anyway, thanks for giving Puppy a try at least!
