Agree with everything you said. Identi.ca just lost my trust. I have hundreds of links on Twitter and elsewhere which are useless. This caused a big disruption. I say this heavy-heartedly, but I am never going to use identi.ca again.

I thought about that as I never spotted an import facility, not as a non-admin anyway.

Based on what Evan told me, they might preserve old data with a redirection (maybe to a persistent Web Archive mirror), so I look forward to the migration with my mind partly at ease. It’s not perfect, but the community has at least put pressure to mitigate the issues.

At least Identi.ca offers the option of exporting the user’s dents and account info to a file that, in theory, can be imported into another Status.Net installation. I say “in theory” because, as of yet, I’ve found no public instances of StatusNet with the ability to import that data.

Identi.ca was federated. These issues are only issues for those who did not take advantage of its federated nature.
However I sympathise with those who assumed that the archive feature was complete/functional (it was open source, we all failed here) and were wishing to move to another instance as soon as they were warned.

I don’t agree with the notion that we should expect Identi.ca to be some sort of permanent CMS for mind farts. The operator (Evan) has no obligation or incentive.
