Academic
I am a Software Engineer, interdisciplinary researcher, and an advocate of fair competition. I hold a doctoral degree in Medical Biophysics. In the hours of daytime I work for a company where I look after free/libre software and I also perform novel research for one of the world's top computer science departments. I founded a company which specialises in scientific computing and also co-founded a media entity, Bytes Media, where I write analysis and commentary. We also deliver it in audio and video form. I have appeared on television several times and also in films. I won several awards over the years for academic achievements, programming achievements, and also sports. For recreation I engage in heavy lifting sports. Below is an old (out of date, as put in 2004) description of my activities.
I am a Ph.D. student at The Victoria University of
Manchester, expecting completion in 2006. I work on a MIAS IRC research project at Imaging Science and Biomedical Engineering, which is a division of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy. I am employed on a casual employment basis at
Manchester Computing and I also retain some duties at HoRNet support. Prior to this I studied software engineering at the Department of Computer Science (home of the "Baby", headed by my project supervisor, Prof. Chris Taylor OBE) where I was involved in a couple of projects and where, as an external student, I still perform many of my experiments with AART/MARS.
Professional
I am an active member of Sourceforge and Freshmeat, a popular author in MATLAB Central and a part of The Computer Ring. I am heavily involved in UseNet (see archive) as well as various technical groups. Occasionally I moderate in Slashdot, continously promoting the use of GNU/Linux as a main-stream operating system. I am committed to extending state-of-the-art technologies (confer projects & utilities) and I have been serving the Web since I was 15.
