Unique users - different computers are typically assigned different IP 
addresses when connected. Unique users are the number of such addresses 
observed in your logs. AWStats leaves crawlers like Google out of stats. 
Webalizer does not.

Number of visits - as above, but includes multiple visits from the same 
address. Visit ends when the browser is closed, I think.

Pages - in the context of blog, number of times the front page is viewed or an 
article is expanded, e.g. in order to enter a comment.

Hits - request for files: graphics, pages, sounds, etc.
