Versions may vary slightly across platforms, but the latest stable
version is said to be 2.2. Although 2.3.x and 2.4.x exist,
2.4.x does not exist yet.
2.3.x are the current development releases.

It appears to exist in the mind of some people, at least those who hack on it.
More than once in the past, someone in comp.graphics.apps.graphics stated that
2.4.x was being used. There is of course the possibility of a unconscious
mistakes, but it's common for such things to happen. Some people hacked on
WordPress 1.3 while 1.2 was out and 1.5 was in the making. Some speak of
Firefox 1.6 and 1.7 too, which is deceiving. Picking number is easy. The
questions are: what's in the changelog and is it the main development branch?
