Of course it is in people's minds, as 2.3.x (unstable) is the road to 2.4
(next stable branch)

I couldn't find many references to GIMP 2.4 (the most recent ones where
caused by Newsforge/Slashdot articles) when searching with Google groups
(and comp.graphics.apps.graphics doesn't exist, did you mean
comp.graphics.apps.gimp?). Maybe you're confusing it with either GTK+ 2.4.x
and Glib 2.4.x, thwo libraries used by GIMP (and many other programs)?

The ChangeLog isn't the best place to determine the current version quickly:
http://developer.gimp.org/ChangeLog

A better place is the NEWS file, http://developer.gimp.org/NEWS, in which
the developers accumulate the most important changes. As you can see, we're
currently at GIMP 2.3.5. Note that new entries are added when the change
occurs, so there might be entries for 2.3.6 before it is released.
