Here is an abstract idea of how you should be able to achieve this:
Make your selection in one image, then copy, paste in the second image and
set the layer to be transparent (opacity 0). Alternatively, you might be
able to select a region in a transparent image (rather than changing
opacity). I doubt it will achieve what you want because evidently you make
an outline of something over a proper colour image.
