Quicktime is not something "that a browser like Firefox can display", unless
you are using Windows or MacOS.

In order to satisfy the following two conditions:
   - A format embeddedable in a web page
   - Reasonably portable among, not only MacOS and Windows, but also Linux
     and other Unix-type operating systems.
I suggest RealVideo. RealPlayer is available on a lot of operating systems,
and its browser plugin always works.

Download the Linux version of RealProducer Basic from:
       http://www.realnetworks.com/products/producer/index.html
its a command-line tool, but its man page its very good and you will find it
easy to use.
