...Sounds as if it possibly, just possibly, created an alternate profile.
This can happen, for example, if you had another session running already
and it was locked. Go to your installation directory and try to find the
profiles. You might spot the old one which Firefox now ignores. This
happened to me many times before with Mozilla (mailbox, to be specific).
