As for the latter:

Have you tried bringing up the HotSync Manager by calling it from (under
Window$) PATH/hotsync.exe? That icon sometimes disappears or HotSync
Manager crashes. Have you considered setting all your data (profile) aside
and re-installing the Palm software? Since you want to overwrite the
desktop, you might even need to back-up nothing in your profile.
