I haven't looked into XML site maps in depth, but if you have a priority
field, use it. If the nature of your site is that it extends
linearly/chronologically and there is a notion of "front page" and
"archives", then assign the highest priority to the most recent items and
have it descend downwards to the oldest items.

Why is it rational? Something you wrote a long time ago, in terms of
likelihood, will be less frequently search for. As an example from
technology, how many people can you find that still search for "Windows 95"
or "Palm Pilot"?
