Are you sure that's how you wanted to phrase the question?

You should be able to read the screen without backlight enabled, but
lighting conditions have to compensate for that. Backlight serves you when
insufficient light is reflected onto the display. Try enabling maximal
backlight when the sun hits the screen, for example. In complete darkness,
your PDA can become a flashlight.

Your question does not say anything about the environment and it doesn't say
what you expect the utility to do for you.
