I am not comfortable with that terminology of X, so I'm sorry if I misled
you. Yes... indeed I had many clients attached to the local X server. It
wasn't the number of windows being managed. I got plenty of meaningless
error messages and windows refused to open. I couldn't afford to reboot for
days because of the remote connections.
I am glad to have discovered that you heard of a "hard upper limit on the
number of *clients* that may be attached to a given X server".
