Well, you're quite right and I spotted that in the article as soon as that

It worries me that Google appear to give back to the Open Source community
only when and where it serves their agenda. Always look for the motive when
you hear about donations from Google. Why do you think they spend money and
effort in Apache, for example?

Google 1998-2003 = Page, Brin
Google 2003-2005 (post initial public offering) = Investors (men in suits)
