I am not sure why you are referring to COM1, but to check which group a user
belongs to you can view objects that are owned by the user, e.g.
roy@BAINE:~> cd /home/roy
roy@BAINE:~> ls
...
drwxr-xr-x 3 roy users 232 2005-11-03 12:20 public_html
So I happen to be among a group called 'users'. Also look under YaST2 ->
Security and Users

Use YaST to do that... it simplifies life greatly.
