I started with dual-boot until I lost interest in the application I had used years ago. Also, I found better applications for Linux, which I became competent with. In due time, the Windows partition became obsolete and thus was deleted entirely.

I'll second that suggestion. I started with Linux in 1996, and dual booted Linux and Windows for four years. It makes the transition a lot easier.

VMWare support for Direct3D is still experimental, so many current games won't run inside VMWare. Dual booting is a much more reliable way to play games than either WINE or VMWare.
