I hadn't realised (at the time) that Mozilla themselves provided an an

I hope this is what you were referring to. It is where all the invisible/hidden options reside -- perhaps options that have not yet been incorporated onto the GUI or tested yet.

Yes, I forgot about the .thunderbird directory. After finding it, the rest was no problem.
