Ian,

Everywhere I go it appears to improve. Here's a relevant story:

Signs

,----[ Quote ]
| Standing at the counter of a local electrical retailer I noticed some
| mp3 players hanging on a rack. The fine print said "Compatible with
| Windows, Mac, Linux".
|
| Later I bought a new monitor at the computer store. The fold out
| install guide included a paragraph on setting up X on Linux to work
| with the monitor.
|
| Checked the documentation for the monitor I bought last year - no
| mention. Ditto for my old mp3 player. It's like that singer guy said:
| "The times there are a-something-0r-other."

When I went to Maplin back in March I asked the seller if the Seagate
external hard-drive would play nice with Linux. He was familiar of Linux and
foresaw no problems. He was right. Plug-and-play in SUSE 9.3, so literally
just seconds to get going...

About the NY Times, this reminds me of article such as this:

Bill Gates lends cash to buy newspapers

        $350 million to MediaNews

,----[ Quote ]
| Gates involvement has been very behind the scenes. In fact many of
| those involved in the deal didn't even know he was one of the investors.
| It was carried out through the Gates Foundation, the world's largest
| philanthropy outfit.
