A lot can be said about changed that force upgrades (i.e. spendings).
Office
2007, much like Windows Vista, will have customers looks elsewhere, at
more
dynamic projects. OpenOffice supports standards far better, is free, Free,
and cross-platform.
I don't see any concessions that that the design change has anything to
do with an effort to "look and behave like Open Office 2". It seems the
complaints are mostly that users want it to look and behave like the older
versions of Microsoft Office.
If anything, I believe it's the other way around, with efforts to make
Open Office look more like Microsoft Office, to make the transition from the
latter to the former as painless as possible. The developers of OO
themselves admitted that much of the focus in the past was to implement as
many MSOffice features into OO office as quickly as possible, and only to
address security issues later, for example.
