Emotions. Perspective. Strategy. All play a role in my humble opinion. Why
else would a budget of half a billion dollars be allocated to eradicate
IBM's role in industry (consulting in particular)? Cut off the middlemen is
the strategy. And why would anti-Linux FUD propaganda get personal and
viral?

Here you talk about a bunch of wealthy executive who compete over whose yacht
is larger and whose revenue exceeds all others. A quote comes to mind:
