We won't. Microsoft is a moving target with hundreds of
millions of dollars in marketing revenue, all targeted to
ensure they look like highly polished dog turds, gleaming
in the showroom spotlights. [*] Compared to the Shiny
Surface(tm), all other offerings -- including of course
FOSS/FLOSS/OSS, will look dingy, dirty, and klunky (although
I for one don't mind Gnome's look and feel; it's basic but
doesn't get in the way, and refined enough so that I don't
feel like I used to with Athena Widgets where everything was
an outlined box).

Of course, Microsoft Products(tm) tend to be sold with the
hood welded on tightly, to enhance durability. Many FLOSS
products have easily removable panel sections; one can then
fiddle with the wiring until the engine is purring smoothly
-- if one knows how to fiddle with the wiring, of course;
not everyone's a top-notch systems analyst, though even
a total duffer can probably make small modifications,
if he knows where to look.

Of course if one wishes one can also convert that engine
into a high-grade rocket. Try that with Microsoft.

The above article does have the following snippet:

[The above] doesn't make linux the better operating
system however. It does show that over the last few
years people are starting to realise that it is for them
the better operating system. Those reasons are varied
and for the most part subjective to the individual
   persons or businesses needs.

And that's about all one can say about the subject; it
all depends on what "better" means. Microsoft is better
if one prefers polished canine endproduct. Linux is
better if one likes something that might actually work.

[*] not to be confused with fossilized cophrophytes.
Of course Microsoft will spray paint them with a mixture
of glitter and disinfectant/deodorant.

Linux. Because it's there and it works.
Windows. It's there, but does it work?
