Is KDE associating links (HTML and the like) with the Web browser?
Additionally, have a look at the Preferences. KDE should be the source to
specify the default behaviour in Thunderbird, but I am not sure about
version 1.5.x.

It isn't quite the case with mailto: in Firefox, which needs to be changed at
about:config-level. See users.js in Thunderbird, if needed.

I guess Big Yellow is referring to Read the Fine (or F*) Manuals.
