This truly sounds like a success story. Brought a smile to me (sic) face.

Many of the above things do *not* work under Windows XP... not out of the box
anyway. The customer relies on QuickRestore (recovery to factory default
state) CD's in the case of laptop (and sometimes desktops too). These are
customises images that are pre-loaded with all the drivers, albeit that also
contains all the spyware and unwanted trial versions (for monetary
concessions). *And* it's unpatched and vulnerable once installed (defective
by design, to use a slogan).

By the sound of it, XP was probably infected (yet undetected) when you wiped
it. Been on that train with Wintendo 2000. Very few people are aware of the
marbid state of their system, which is why Windows security issues are
/grossly/ underestimated.
