People are wont to confuse can with must in these situations.  Just
because you can spend your life tailoring linux, doesn't mean
that you must.  Its stability is such that once set up, it remains that
way.  Maintenance is necessary, naturally, but is exceptionally limited,
particularly on embedded systems.
