/Always/ make complete backups of ~/.thunderbird, just in case (even a stack
of backups, to avoid backup 'contamination'). I never had to restore from
backup myself, but bear in mind that any customisation resides there in an
easy-to-interpret (or add, or strip) form. Mozilla/Firefox are no exception.
Anyhow, Thunderbird is rather stable for me in the sense that it can run for
weeks without a restart (I use version 1.0.4, so there are a few memory
leaks). This early segmentation fault might be a case of bad luck or a
rotten extension that you installed (or a combination thereof, which lead to
a fatal conflict).

I am assuming that you installed Enigmail. It's UI is not trivial, but than
again, encryption takes a while to get a mental grip on (including
terminology and technical jargon). Is your PGP daemon running? Have you
tried re-installing the plug-in (extension)? Once you get it working (and
the password saved for the remainder of the session), it's a breeze.

I'd advice against that. I still have KMail running off Ctrl+Alt+O
(Thunderbird is Ctrl+Alt+0), but handling mail in several boxes can be
perplexing, inconsistent and prone to issue. For starters, you need to BCC
all outgoing mail to self and avoid popping mail off the stack, which still
leaves you having to mark messages as read, twice (unless/until you set up
benign filter rules).

Thunderbird is better than any mail client I have ever come acorss, owing to
plugins. Even Outlook (pricey Office) is like a joke compared with
fully-loaded Thunderbird. And that's just on the factor of funcationality;
not stability and security aspects.

Best wishes,

Roy
