I think what Harrison is talking about is that lumbering relic of 70's
microcomputer design. Even back in the 70's the solution for many of the
problems we have were already known. The problem is that the introduction
of such solutions would require a major rework of the architecture.
It is clear that anything that did not have the PC architecture could not
run Windows. The public had come to accept the major weaknesses in the
PC and Windows as just being part of computing. Microsoft's advantage is
that the public at large had a minimal computing skill set, probably
learnt at school or paid for in expensive courses and hence had no desire
to learn anything new.
What it appears that Harrison is saying is that once people see that there
is a better way, the existing PC market will be forced to follow suit. I
suspect that he is right. Children have fewer problems learning new
technologies and the need to go massively parallel rather than up in speed
is long overdue.
On the other hand, the cell processor seems to have been designed for
process control. It will be interesting to see how well it handles general
purpose computing.
