I'd want some persuasive reason to spend money on something from
Microsoft, which won't run on most platforms and is proprietary, as
an alternative to using something which is open, and will run on most
platforms, and has no purchase price.

It's hard to imagine why anyone would even consider buying Office 2007
as a deliberately taken decision;  I can see how inertia will achieve
it, I can see how incompetence on the purchaser's part will achieve it,
I can see how pre-installs will achieve it, but I /cannot/ see any
reasonable decision-making process achieving it.  Even "compatibility"
is a non-issue these days, as governments increasingly go to open
standards and away from proprietary stuff.
