Talk about hoisted by your own petard... Microsoft was able to stymie CPU
evolution for so long that they and their partners-in-crime became
dependent on single-machine software design. Then, one small CPU change
finally escaped their control, and suddenly their dependency has turned
into a ball-and-chain.

I really don't see MS ever catching up now. By the time Vista comes out,
and then sufficient numbers of commercial vendors have released 64-bit
applications for it, CPU design will have moved along - and OSS will be
right there with it, while MS will just be catching up to technology
that's already a few years old right now.

It's no wonder the rats are leaving.
