I know one large (100,000+ pages) Web site that was affected around the 18th
of June. Everything returned to normal (the old state) within a few days.

Yes, exactly. That's one thing that has been bothering me as I depend on this
feature, personally. It's not a matter of traffic vanity, but a matter of
finding my way around resources which I need for work. Yahoo and MSN have
not got sufficient depth. You could opt for other services (search
facilities) in the mean time. There's some source code for A9, Yahoo and
others in http://Schestowitz.com/Search , in case you are interested. Just
copy and paste, then change URL's.

I think there are too issues at hand. One is the "site:" operator being
broken. Google confirmed this, applied a patch and expect this to get
rectified, over time. The other issue is major loss of pages, due to SPAM.
There is no formal confirmation of this, though.
