If you eventually give up on SuSE (for the laptop), I would recommend
PCLinuxOS < http://www.pclinuxos.com/ > and Kubuntu. I suspect that both
will probe, successfully detect and support everything (including wireless)
Speaking based on experiences that I hear about....

That is very odd. Inconsistency is a bad sign. Have you tried SuSE 9.3? I am
aware of people who could not upgrade from 9.3 to 10.0 while retaining full
hardware compatibility. I strongly encourage you to ask the folks at
alt.os.linux.suse (alt.os.linux for Deutsch).

It's possible, but let's see what others who are involved in this thread can
think of. I am not a very experienced Linux user, but I am trying my best to
help... *smile*
